Lawsuit testing Bevin’s vetoes rests with new GOP majority

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – The outgoing speaker of the Kentucky House of Representatives says he hopes his replacement will continue a lawsuit challenging the validity of Republican Gov. Matt Bevin’s budget vetoes.

Republicans won a majority in the Kentucky House of Representatives last week for the first time since 1920. Democratic House Speaker Greg Stumbo lost his re-election bid. Earlier this year, Stumbo asked a judge to invalidate some of Bevin’s budget vetoes because he said they were not filed correctly.

At stake is about $9 million for college scholarships, $1 million for a colon cancer screening program and an expanded public preschool program.

Incoming Republican Speaker Jeff Hoover said he will review the lawsuit once he has a legal team in place to “make a determination on how to move forward.”
