July Ends with Sizzling Heat, But Relief is in Sight

Hot and humid conditions stick around through midweek before cooler, less muggy air moves in late week.

Heat and Humidity Keep Their Grip on the Region

The final weekend of July wrapped up with yet another round of summer sizzle across Central and Eastern Kentucky. Sunday afternoon highs climbed back into the low to mid-90s, and with humidity running high, heat index values once again pushed near or above 100 degrees in many spots. Scattered showers and storms developed during the afternoon and evening for some, offering brief relief, while other locations basked under plenty of sunshine.

Hot and Muggy to Start the New Week

As we close out July and head into the first part of the workweek, the same stagnant summer pattern sticks around. A strengthening upper-level ridge over the Ohio Valley will keep storm chances limited to just a few isolated pop-ups here and there. Afternoon highs will stay above average, in the low to mid-90s, and with all that moisture in the air, heat index values could climb back into the danger zone, topping 100 degrees in some spots. A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon Monday through 8 PM Wednesday for areas surrounding and West of Lexington. If you’re spending time outdoors, remember to take it slow, drink plenty of water, and use extra sunscreen.

Relief on the Horizon Late Next Week

By the middle of the week, a stronger front will finally push into the region, increasing storm chances Wednesday into Thursday. This will also usher in some drier, less humid air as we turn the page to August. By late next week, afternoon highs are expected to back off into the upper 80s, and humidity levels should become noticeably more comfortable—a welcome change after days of oppressive heat and muggy air.
