Feeling more like late October this week
We could see a decent chance of some morning frost by weeks end
After quite a weekend with a summer-like Saturday followed by a windy, wet and cooler Sunday, it was a quiet start to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky. The day started quite chilly with temperatures dropping into the upper 30s and low 40s before we enjoyed a pleasant afternoon across the area. High pressure to our south kept things mostly sunny from start to finish with afternoon highs topping out into the mid-60s, which is roughly where we should be for this time of the year.
A weak cold front will drop through the Ohio Valley into Tuesday bringing a very low end chance of a shower or two, along with a reinforcing shot of cooler air, but that will be felt more into the mid to late week. Look for another breezy day on Tuesday with southwest wind ahead of the boundary gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour at times. We should see a good bit of sunshine mixed in with some clouds and any shower activity should be isolated at best. In fact most locations may end up being dry. Afternoon highs will get a slight bump thanks to the southwest wind, so look for temperatures to top out in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees, especially for areas down south.
As the front pulls eastward into the mid-week, an upper level low over the Great Lakes will keep some wind in play so the breezy conditions should persist into Wednesday. It still looks chilly on Wednesday morning with temperatures back down around the 40 degree mark and with cooler air pushed in by the brisk west wind, afternoon highs may only recover into the upper-50s to low-60s, so it will definitely feel like fall despite plenty of sunshine. As the winds lighten up into early Thursday along with clear skies in place, this will be an ideal set-up for our first possible widespread frost of the season given the chilly air-mass. Temperatures may drop into the mid-30s so it could be time to protect those plants you want to hang onto a bit longer. Thursday looks nice once again with more sunshine and fall-like highs into the low-60s.
Our weather should stay quiet to finish out the week with another frosty morning on tap Friday followed by a mainly sunny day with afternoon highs back into the mid-60s. It should be good football weather on Friday evening for all the high school games as the season hits the home stretch with temperatures falling into the 50s. A slow moving area of low pressure will creep in from the west/southwest over the weekend bringing a return chance of a few scattered showers to the region. While we aren’t looking at a wash-out by any means, there should be at least a few showers from time to time, so you’ll need to plan accordingly if you are heading back out to Kroger Field again this week as Kentucky takes on arch-rival Tennessee on Saturday evening. It does appear the best chance for organized showers will be Saturday night and into Sunday so take the rain gear along with you for the game or any other outdoor activities you may have planned. Temperatures will continue to be right around average for late October with afternoon highs mainly into the mid-60s through the weekend.
