Feeling more like fall across the commonwealth this week

Dry and pleasant weather is on tap for the next several days
October 7, 2024
T.G. Shuck,

It felt much more like the fall season to kick off the week across central and Eastern Kentucky. With a frontal boundary moving through the region early Monday much cooler air filtered into the region. Despite plots of bright sunshine a brisk north wind held afternoon highs into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees. Get set for a cool start to Tuesday as morning lows dip into the low to mid-40s so a light jacket or sweater may come in handy early.

Expect more of the same on Tuesday as strong high pressure dominates our weather here in the Ohio Valley. After the chilly start to the day temperatures should rebound nicely but only top out into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees yet again with the cool air-mass in place. Overall it should be a delightful day with more of the same expected in the coming days.

Early October typically features a quiet weather pattern most years here in the commonwealth and this year is no exception. It should be more of the same through the mid and late week with very pleasant days full of sunshine and mainly clear and cool nights. Temperatures should climb a few degrees Wednesday with afternoon highs back into the low -70s. By Thursday a weak back door front could clip our region from the northeast knocking our temperatures back a few degrees but no rain is expected due to the lack of moisture.
Tg Fly
The big weather story this week will be the expected landfall of powerful Hurricane Milton, which is expected to move across Central Florida from west to east sometime late Wednesday. Milton is a strong Category 5 hurricane with max winds of 175 miles per hour as of Monday afternoon with one of the lowest measured barometric pressures on record in the Atlantic basin. While the overall intensity may waver a bit before landfall as it runs into a less conducive environment, it is still expected to be a major hurricane at landfall with destructive storm surge and winds along the west coast of Florida with the landfall anywhere between the Tampa area down toward Fort Myers. Unfortunately some of the same areas around Tampa that were impacted by Helene recently may see additional negative impacts from Milton.

Heading into the weekend it looks delightful here in the Bluegrass with more sunshine and highs in the mid-70s. The weather should be ideal for all the fall festivals going on around the area, not to mention the Fall meet at Keeneland continuing along with the evening match-up Saturday between Kentucky and Vanderbilt out at Kroger Field. A stronger front should arrive by early next week with breezy conditions and even cooler air so we’ll keep an eye on that.
