Feeling like late December to close out 2023
An upper level low will exit the area with a few leftover rain/snow showers into Saturday
It finally looked like the holiday season across parts of Central and Eastern Kentucky on Friday as an upper level low spinning overhead helped produce a few scattered snow showers from time to time. With ground temperatures above freezing, these snow showers had little to no impact but it did look festive around the region. Temperatures were chilly with most locations holding tight into the mid to upper 30s for afternoon highs.
The upper low responsible for the unsettled weather will head eastward into Saturday but with some moisture on the back side we are still looking at the potential for a few scattered snow and rain showers across Southeastern Kentucky through the day. The highest elevations above 1500 feet could see some minor accumulations but otherwise just a small coating on the grassy areas is expected. Highs will remain chilly into the upper 30s and low 40s.
Closing out 2023 on Sunday it should be milder with a southerly flow ahead of a fast moving frontal boundary as afternoon highs surge into the upper 40s. However the front should move through by early evening with a quick drop in temperatures so if you are heading out to celebrate the New Year make sure and dress accordingly as temperatures will be in the low 30s by Midnight. Other than a few spotty snow showers or flurries, it should be a dry evening.
The first couple of days of 2024 look quiet before we keep an eye on a southern stream system that could impact parts of our area by the mid-week. With a wave of low pressure sliding by to the south on Wednesday night and temperatures cold enough, we could see some light snow showers across the south and east. Keep in mind the track of the low will be the deciding factor on how things play out so we’ll keep a close watch heading into next week! Happy New Year!
