Fans celebrate running of the Kentucky Oaks

Today was the Kentucky Oaks, kicking off this year’s derby weekend.
The weather was not too great for this first day of derby weekend but that didn’t stop thousands of people from coming out and enjoying the festivities.

The chilly weather and rain didn’t seem to damper peoples moods at this year’s racing of the Kentucky Oaks.

While ponchos were aplenty, many people still wore their sharpest outfits they had been planning for months.
“Six months-ish. 40 years. Well that’s true. I do enjoy the hat,” said Aaron Coryell and Taunya Brandom, spectators.

“I shopped for days for my outfit and we match and we look so cute,” said Cheri Tufts, a spectator.

And because the oaks is the lilies for the fillies race, another big part of the day is promoting breast cancer awareness and honoring survivors.

“To see the sea of pink everywhere is just so encouraging that the derby would dedicate an entire day to women,” said Tufts.

From raising money for a good cause, to just having a blast in the rain spectators say this weekend at Churchill Downs is unlike anything else.
“There’s no experience like it. It’s just all positive. Everybody that comes here has a great time and there’s no way you can’t,” said Tom Hilt, a spectator.
