Fall-like air settles into the commonwealth for the weekend

Expect a major drop in temperatures with some of the coolest air we've since since last spring

It’s been a dry and progressively warmer week across Central and Eastern Kentucky and Friday was no exception as a cold front approached from the northwest. With a southwest flow and plenty of sunshine, afternoon highs surged into the upper 80s with a few low 90s here and there so it was definitely a summer-like finish to close out the week. The aforementioned front should produce a few scattered showers and storms Friday evening and into the early hours of Saturday but more importantly it will usher in another shot of fall-like air just in time for the upcoming weekend.

You should really feel the difference as you step out on Saturday as temperatures should drop down into the mid-50s to start the day. Once thing that will add to the cool feel of the air is a brisk north wind at 10 to 15 miles per hour through Saturday. Even with some sunshine around, afternoon highs will struggle to reach the upper 60s and low 70s and it should feel cooler than that thinks to the wind. It typically takes the body a bit to get acclimated to the cooler air, especially given we had record heat a week ago so plan accordingly for any outdoor activities. It should be perfect football weather for Kentucky and South Carolina at Kroger Field on Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm (which you can watch right here on ABC 36 if you can’t make it out to the stadium). It’s rare to have an afternoon game in early September that’s not uncomfortably warm/hot/humid so enjoy this bonus nice weather.

A chill in the air is expected to great you Sunday morning with lows dipping down into the mid to upper 40s with a few of the outlying areas dipping down into the low-40s. This will be some of the coolest air we’ve seen since last spring so a jacket or a sweater will come in handy early in the day. We could tie or even break a few record morning lows Sunday so keep that in mind. It should be a delightful finish to the weekend with more sunshine, pleasant air and afternoon highs in the low to mid-70s.

Remember it is still early September and we typically see some warmer temperatures hanging around deeper into the month so all the data indicates we’ll see a quick return of more late summer weather into next week. By Wednesday afternoon highs should have recovered back into the upper 80s so the toasty air won’t be gone for good after the fall temperatures of the weekend. The other concern is for another extended stretch of dry weather through next week which should continue to set is back relative to drought conditions across the area so that’s something to keep an eye on. Have a great weekend!
