Fake GoFundMe account collecting donations for Trinity Gay deactivated

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – A fraudulent GoFundMe account soliciting donations for a Trinity Gay farewell party has been deactivated.

The account, which set a goal of raising $8,000 dollars, claimed to be hosting the party to pay respect to the family and address “black on black gun violence and crime.”

Police in Lexington sent out a release warning the public of the bogus page, warning that the account was “not anything created or supported by the family.”

The account was deactivated Tuesday afternoon just before 3:00 p.m., having recorded one donation of $100 dollars.

A spokesperson for GoFundMe released a statement, saying, “We take fraud very seriously and have multiple layers of security in place to protect users. The platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means all users are protected by a refund policy. This campaign has been suspended and the donor has been refunded.”
