Dry for Valentine’s Day as more wet weather looms
The flooding concern continues to increase with several inches of rain expected this weekend
Thursday Recap:
We finally caught a break Thursday from the relentless rain as drier air settled over the region. However, the combination of lingering clouds and a brisk northwest wind kept temperatures on the chilly side, with afternoon highs hovering in the mid-30s. As we move into the night, clearing skies will allow temperatures to dip into the upper teens, so be sure to bundle up if you’re heading out.
Valentine’s Day Outlook:
Friday is shaping up to be quite pleasant for Valentine’s Day. We’ll start the day with sunshine, and temperatures are expected to reach the low 40s by the afternoon. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy some outdoor activities with your loved ones.
Weekend Storm Alert:
Our attention now turns to a significant storm system poised to impact our area on Saturday. This system is drawing ample moisture from the south, setting the stage for several rounds of moderate to heavy rain throughout the day. Rainfall totals are projected to range between 2 to 4 inches across many locations, with isolated spots 4 plus inches here in Central Kentucky while parts of Southern Kentucky could see 5 plus inches of rain!
Given the saturated ground from recent rains, there’s a heightened concern for flash flooding and river flooding. A Flood Watch is in effect for all of Central and Eastern Kentucky from Friday night through Sunday morning. If you reside in flood-prone areas, it’s crucial to make necessary preparations and stay vigilant.
Saturday will also be unseasonably mild, with temperatures climbing into the upper 50s. This warmth could fuel thunderstorms, some of which may be strong. Even after the rain subsides, rivers are expected to rise, leading to potential flooding into next week.
Sunday and Beyond:
As the storm system departs, colder air will rush in, causing temperatures to fall through the 30s and into the upper 20s by Sunday evening. Scattered snow showers are possible to close out the weekend. Looking ahead to President’s Day on Monday, expect cold but dry conditions, with afternoon highs struggling to reach the upper 20s. As we approach the middle of next week, a southern system could bring a return of wintry weather to the Bluegrass, so we’ll keep a close eye on that.
