Dreary weather should ease up a bit into Tuesday

The stubborn upper low will begin to jog eastward the next few days

After a chilly and gray Kentucky Derby weekend, the gloomy trend has unfortunately lingered into the first full week of May. A slow-moving upper-level low has been the culprit, spinning over the Ohio Valley and keeping a firm grip on our weather. That system has brought clouds, periods of light rain and cooler-than-average temperatures—daytime highs have struggled to even crack the mid to upper 50s, which is a good 15 degrees below seasonal norms. Fortunately, that dreary pattern is about to shift.

Slow Exit for the Upper Low

As we head into Tuesday, the stubborn upper-level low will begin to move east finally loosening its grip on the region. That means we’ll see more breaks in the clouds allowing for a mix of sun and clouds throughout the day. While a few spotty showers are still possible especially during the daylight hours, most locations will stay dry. With a little help from the sunshine, temperatures will rebound nicely—expect afternoon highs to reach the upper 60s. Compared to the weekend and Monday, this will feel like a much-needed improvement.

A Midweek Taste of Spring

Wednesday is shaping up to be the nicest day of the week. We’ll enjoy dry conditions under a mix of sun and clouds as a brief ridge of high pressure settles in. Highs will climb back into the low 70s, bringing us closer to where we should be for early May. It’ll be a welcome break in what has been a pretty wet and dreary pattern.

The dry weather won’t last long though. By Thursday another system will begin to affect the region. A wave of low pressure from the southwest will interact with a cold front diving in from the northwest. This setup will bring scattered showers and a few thunderstorms during the day, but we’re not expecting a washout. Temperatures should still be fairly comfortable with highs staying in the low 70s.

Early Glance at Mother’s Day Weekend

Looking ahead to the weekend, the overall trend favors drier weather. While a weak disturbance may hang just to our south, it appears that most spots will be dry. Expect partly sunny skies both Saturday and Sunday with highs in the low to mid-70s—right on par for this time of year. All in all not a bad setup if you’re planning something special for Mother’s Day.
