Dodging scattered storms for the final weekend of June

Locally heavy downpours will be possible with all the warmth and moisture around

The early summer heat wave rolled on Friday across central and eastern Kentucky, as temperatures again surged into the low 90s and heat index values flirted with 100° at times. Scattered slow-moving storms popped up throughout the day, producing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and even a little small hail in some spots. It’s been a hot stretch for sure—but we’re starting to see the first signs of relief as we head into the weekend.

Slight Relief in Sight for Saturday
That massive ridge of high pressure that’s been cooking the region is finally starting to break down. A weak front to our north and some upper-level energy to the south are helping to nudge that ridge westward, and as a result, we’ll cool off slightly on Saturday. Highs will still be warm—upper 80s to around 90—but the heat index values should stay mostly below 100. Expect scattered storms again, especially in the afternoon and evening. Given how slowly they’re moving, some localized flooding is possible with heavier downpours.

Warm, Muggy, and Stormy at Times to End June
Sunday looks very similar—muggy, warm, and somewhat unsettled. Afternoon highs hover near 90°, and scattered thunderstorms are once again possible during peak heating. No need to cancel any weekend plans, but be prepared for a few interruptions. Take the umbrella or poncho just in case, and don’t forget the sunscreen and water if you’re outside for long stretches.

Cold Front Brings Break from the Muggy Air Next Week
We’ll close out June on a warm and stormy note Monday, but a cold front will swing through by Tuesday, bringing with it a better chance for widespread storms—and more importantly, a break in the humidity. Behind the front, highs drop back into the mid to upper 80s, and dewpoints dip into the 60s, making it feel much more comfortable. This cooler, drier pattern should hold as we head into Fourth of July week—great news for any early holiday plans.
