Dodging a few showers to kick off Mother’s Day weekend
We should be in the clear with sunshine by Sunday and highs in the 70s
It was definitely a cooler finish to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky Friday as the combination of clouds, a few sprinkles and a brisk northwest wind put the brakes on any warm-up. After starting out in the low-50s Friday morning, a bank of stubborn mid-levels clouds really slowed temperatures moderating so some locations in South Central Kentucky took the better part of the day to reach and eclipse the 60 degree mark. Most spots ended up in the 60s for afternoon highs, a good 6-10 degrees below average but luckily temperatures should recover nicely for Mother’s Day weekend.
A wave of low pressure will dive south through the Eastern Great Lakes on Saturday and with enough moisture and lift around, we should see a few scattered showers to kick off the weekend. The good news is that these will be hit and miss so not everyone will see rain, plus the data has been trending farther east with the track of the low so that would help cutdown on the overall rain chances. It won’t be an all day rain but just take an umbrella along just in case for any outdoor activities. With some sunshine and winds shifting to the southwest, afternoon highs should sneak back into the low 70s.
Heading into Mother’s Day our weather looks really nice for all the moms out there thanks to high pressure building in from the west. Expect a pleasant Sunday with sunshine and afternoon highs into the low to mid-70s. Most importantly it will be a dry day and a nice way to wrap up the weekend. Heading into Monday, our next storm system will approach from the west but I think we’ll squeeze in most of the day before a few showers and storms sneak in late day. This will kick us back into a fairly unsettled pattern much of next week.
It’s not uncommon during the moth of May to have stretches with daily rain and storm chances and that appears to be on the table at least for part of next week. Our best chance for organized rain and storms will come with our first system on Tuesday with showers lingering into the mid-week. It does appear the data is trending drier now for Thursday so we may squeeze a dry day in from start to finish. That may be the only one of the week as another storm system cruises in about a week from now and that would could have a little more strong storm potential so we’ll keep an eye on it into next week.
