Dodging a few showers and storms into the mid-week
Some of the storms could produce some locally heavy rain and gusty winds through Wednesday
It felt every bit of the summer on Tuesday across Central and Eastern Kentucky even though we are officially still a few weeks away from the start of the season. With plenty of moisture streaming northward we saw a bit surge in the humidity levels and you could really feel the humid air to go along with very warm temperatures. Highs reach the mid-80s and with the sunshine heating up the surface we saw isolated to scattered storms develop during the afternoon hours. With little wind aloft these storms were slow moving so any location underneath saw some locally heavy rain, gusty winds and some lightning. Expect more of the same as far as storm chances heading into the mid-week.
A slow moving frontal system will slide into the Ohio Valley on Wednesday keeping the chances for occasional rain and storms in the forecast. Similar to Tuesday any of the storms have the potential to produce locally heavy rain, some minor flooding and gusty winds. It’s possible that we could see a few strong storms fire up with damaging winds being the primary culprit but we aren’t looking at anything widespread. It should be another warm day despite the clouds and storms around with highs sneaking into the low 80s.
The big story for the late week and beyond with be a bit of a cooldown by early to mid-June standards. A secondary boundary will follow suit on Thursday but shouldn’t move through until later in the day. This will be the leading edge of the advertised milder air but we should squeeze in one last unseasonably warm day on Thursday with some sunshine, a stray shower chance and afternoon highs into the low to mid-80s. You should feel the difference as out “muggy-cast” takes a significant drop with drier air returning along with pleasant temperatures as we close out the week. Highs should only reach the mid-70s, which is slightly below average for this time of the year and should feel very nice.
The weekend looks to start on a mainly dry note as the west to northwest flow continues to keep the pleasant air in place across the Ohio Valley. A series of weak frontal systems will drop in from the northwest increasing our chances for a few stray showers on Sunday with highs in the mid-70s. A decent boundary now looks to crush through on Monday so we may see a slightly better chances for a few showers and with the clouds and rain in the area, afternoon highs may struggle to reach the low-70s. Temperatures should slowly start to recover through next week but it may take a few days.
