Demonstration calls for end to harassment at Berea College
BEREA, Ky. (WTVQ) – Berea College student groups, faculty and staff, along with groups from the community, demonstrated on campus Monday, responding to a growing number of racially charged incidents involving the Confederate flag and harassment to students of color and LGBTQ students.
Participants gathered in front of the President’s Home and along the south side of Chestnut Street in the central portion of campus. Participants hope to convey inclusiveness as expressed in the College’s motto: “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.”
Organizers say the peaceful display is designed to demonstrate that while respectful of the constitutionally protected rights of others ─ even if it involves abhorrent or disagreeable expressions of speech ─ Bereans are not obliged to suffer intimidation, denigration, threats or violations of the civil rights of any student or others.
