Coroner: One man is dead, 9-people missing in Johnson County after flash flooding

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – One man died and nine people are missing after flash flooding devastated the Flat Gap Community of Johnson County on Monday, according to the coroner.

Investigators say the man, whose name wasn’t released pending notification of family, drowned on Patterson Creek at Flat Gap.  Rescue crews say the worst of the flooding was along Ramey Branch.

As many as 50-homes were damaged or destroyed by the flood waters, according to Johnson County Emergency Management.  Highways 172-and-201 were closed due to high water.

The Red Cross opened an emergency shelter for storm victims at the Paintsville Recreation Center at 232 Preston Street in Paintsville.  Storm victims who needed shelter were encouraged to go to the temporary shelter or call Emergency Management in Paintsville at 606-789-2260.
