Cooler temperatures to end the week as a few spotty showers linger

The good news heading into Mother's Day weekend is that it is looking dry for the big day Sunday

It’s been an active weather pattern across the area over the last couple of days, especially late Wednesday as heavy rain and thunderstorms moved through the state. Luckily we largely managed to get through this event unscathed with just a few reports of trees/power lines down, some hail damage and flooding issues all across Southern Kentucky. This was a case of where a few miles made a huge difference as the boundary that triggered widespread severe weather settled far enough to the south to keep most of Central and Eastern Kentucky out of harms way. Unfortunately for our neighbors to the south and west the saw the bulk of the tornadoes and damaging winds as you can clearly see from the storm reports map from this event.

The frontal boundary responsible for all the active weather will be east of the commonwealth heading into Friday which will allow cooler air to filter in from the northwest. Expect a mix of clouds and sunshine to close out the week as afternoon highs struggle to reach the mid to upper 60s. Some mid-level energy may rotate through during the day which could help a few stray showers to develop but most locations should be dry.

Tg Futurecast

A fast moving wave of low pressure will dive south through the Ohio Valley on Saturday keeping the chances of a few showers around with afternoon highs still held in check thanks to the scattered showers and clouds so expect readings in the upper 60s. The good news is that high pressure should take over just in time for Mother’s Day on Sunday so we are looking at a mostly sunny and dry day with afternoon highs returning to where there should be for mid-May into the low-70s.

Tg Fly

Our break from the unsettled weather won’t last long as a series of systems should roll through the region from west to east beginning late Monday and continuing the rest of the week. Our highest chances for rain and a few storms will be Tuesday and again on Thursday as main areas of low pressure slide in. It shouldn’t be a wash-out any day but just keep the rain gear handy. At least we are getting to that time of the year where the really cool days are finally gone so highs next week look good as the hang into the mid-70s daily.
