Churchill Downs cancels racing for 2nd day

Churchill Downs has canceled live racing for a second day due to a track frozen by a blast of winter weather this week.

Racing was canceled Wednesday and Thursday in what the track said was the first time a frozen track has forced back-to-back cancellations since 1970.

The track said horses have been unable to train on the dirt surface since Tuesday.

Track maintenance employees worked around the clock Wednesday but were unable to thaw the one-mile main track.

Three inches of snow fell Monday in Louisville, and nightly lows have been in the teens.

Churchill plans a 10-race card at 12:40 p.m. EST Friday. The Grade III, $100,000-added Cardinal Handicap is part of an 11-race card scheduled Saturday.

The last day of the fall meet is Nov. 30.
