Bus driver shortage causing heavier traffic

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Fayette county schools canceled several bus routes again Monday morning and delayed routes Monday afternoon. The district cancelled or delayed routes every day last week. The bus driver shortage is impacting more than just students and their parents.

You may have noticed your commute taking longer, or maybe hitting more traffic. AAA says the bus driver shortage has changed traffic patterns, meant more kids are walking to school, and altered the times bus routes run. AAA says you should be even more alert while driving and remember to stop for school buses, even if on the other side of the street.

“Give yourself extra time so you don’t feel rushed,” says Lori Weaver Hawkins, public affairs manager for AAA Bluegrass. “You know, a lot of times when these traffic mishaps occur somebody’s either distracted or they’re rushed, they’re feeling like ‘oh I’m late, I’ve got to rush through here’.”

AAA says for now, avoid school zones if you can to lighten traffic.
