Brief shot of winter Saturday ahead of a big warm-up early next week

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

Happy Friday everyone! After heavy rain fell Thursday afternoon and evening, we are tracking drier weather for your Friday. Afternoon highs will reach the mid-to-upper 50s under partly cloudy skies. A light shower or two can’t be ruled out during the afternoon in eastern Kentucky but most other areas will be dry. We are tracking the chance of some light wintry weather moving into the region on Saturday. This is not a strong system but does give us a quick shot of cold air. Afternoon highs on Saturday will struggle to get out of the mid-to-upper 30s after the snow showers exit during the afternoon.

Temps will fall into the 20s early Sunday morning but the winter-like feel quickly ends by Sunday afternoon. Sunday afternoon temperatures will return to the mid-to-upper 50s. This warming trend will continue through the middle of the week. Afternoon highs on Tuesday could push 70 degrees for many areas. This will be accompanied by a few showers on Monday and isolated-to-scattered showers/t-storms on Tuesday.

Wednesday is where things turn more active. A strong cold front will sweep through the region. This will be bring a round of storms, potentially strong-to-severe thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center is already highlighting next Wednesday for a potential severe threat. Gusty winds are likely outside of any storms as well. Temperatures will quickly drop after the passing of the cold front. Expect another big drop in temperatures to end next week behind the cold front.
