Breezy with more rain showers into Wednesday

Our unsettled weather pattern will stay put in the coming days

After a cold start to the week Monday with low clouds hanging around, we saw a bit of welcome sunshine slowly return on Tuesday along with better temperatures overall. With a fast moving system diving toward the Ohio Valley, winds shifted around to the southwest and picked up in intensity with gusts cranking up over 30 miles per hour at times. This combined with the sunshine helped push afternoon highs back into the low 40s, which is much closer to average for this time of the year. Our active weather pattern and roller coaster ride of temperatures should continue over the next few days.

Look for very gusty winds into early Wednesday with gusts over 40 miles per hour so you should feel the windows rattle a bit during the overnight hours. This southwest wind will prevent temperatures from dropping more than a few degrees with upper 30s just after Midnight before climbing back into the low 40s by daybreak. Look for some scattered rain showers ahead of the front on Wednesday morning to go along with the wind so the morning commute could be slowed down. The front is likely to pass through late morning so our highs for Wednesday will be early in the day (mid-40s) before temperatures fall back into the 30s. Some lingering moisture should produce a few scattered snow showers late Wednesday and into Wednesday night as a brisk northwest wind sets up.

Get set for more cold into Thursday as low clouds stay socked in, keeping afternoon highs quite chilly into the mid-30s in most locations. We could see a few flurries from time to time but it should be mainly dry overall. Another fast moving wave of energy looks to cruise into the commonwealth Thursday night and into Friday and the data is indicating there may be enough moisture to lay another round of some light snow on the ground, especially for Central and Northern Kentucky. The timing again looks to be during the overnight and into Friday morning so this could have some impact on travel if things shake out this way. Stay tuned on that.

The “wave” train will truck along into the weekend with a mainly dry and partly cloudy Saturday on tap as afternoon highs reach the mid to upper 30s. As mentioned yesterday, the data is now showing another wave of energy sliding in from the west Saturday night and into Sunday so it appears we may have another rain showers over to snow showers scenario in play during that window. It does look a good bit colder on Sunday, but not the blast of colder air that was forecast for that time period a few days ago so it shouldn’t be as extreme. Nevertheless look for afternoon highs into the mid 20s for highs on Sunday and lows in the teens before temperatures begin to moderate into early next week.
