Balloon release held for elderly Lexington woman killed in drive-by

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – Family and friends of an elderly Lexington woman who was killed in a drive-by shooting gathered Wednesday to honor her.

The group released purple balloons at Charles Young Park for 82-year-old Alice Carter.

Carter’s niece, Laquita Washington, says purple was Carter’s favorite color, and she liked spending time with her kids at the park.

The release started in prayer, and several people, including her daughter, cried.

Washington says Carter will be missed.

“She was the kind that if you needed a meal, she had a meal for you,” Washington says. “If you needed a place to stay, you could stay. She was a soldier in the church. She was just a pillar in the community is what she was.”

Washington says the family won’t stop fighting for justice until suspects are found.

Police say Carter died last Wednesday, simply getting out of her car near her home on West Fifth Street.

Officers say dozens of gunshots hit her as people in two cars fired at each other.
