Another round of fall-like air on the way for the weekend
Rain and storms will give way to clouds and cool temps Saturday
It was a warm finish to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky as a southwest flow ahead of an approaching cold front helped to push afternoon highs all the way back into the mid-80s on Friday. The front will trigger another round of rain and storms heading into Friday night with the potential of a few strong storms during the evening hours especially across the southern and southeastern parts of the commonwealth.
It may be a damp and dreary start on Saturday as scattered showers will be possible through the morning hours with some moisture lingering behind the front. As usual some low cloudiness looks to linger behind the front for the better part of Saturday and with a northwest wind pushing cooler air into the region, we’ll flip the script back to a fall-like feel in a hurry. You’ll need to take the rain gear along if you are tailgating prior to Kentucky’s SEC opener against Ole Miss at 3:30pm but it does appear most of the showers should be gone by game time. With the low cloud deck struggling to break apart, it will be “football weather” as temperatures struggle through the 60s for afternoon highs so dress accordingly if you are heading to the game or have any outdoor plans. We could see a few breaks in the clouds before sunset but expect a mainly overcast Saturday.
Cool Canadian high pressure will build in for the second half of the weekend, bringing another round of fall-like air to the Ohio Valley. temperatures should drop into the upper 40s on Sunday morning, which could approach record lows once again. It should be a very pleasant finish to the weekend with highs into the low to mid-70s. Record morning lows may be threatened again Monday morning as the area of high pressure builds in so we’ll be set-up for optimal radiational cooling. Afternoon highs should remain quite nice for early to mid-September with temperatures topping out into the mid-70s.
Another extended stretch of tranquil weather is on tap for much of next week as multiple areas of high pressure stay in control across the eastern part of the country. Temperatures should gradually warm up a bit with low to even mid-80s possible toward the end of the week. A dry cold front may slide in late week which would bring a slight drop in temperatures behind it but overall our weather looks pretty delightful heading into the middle part of September.
