An unsettled weather pattern kicks in this week
More much needed rain on the way the next few days
After an unseasonably cool Derby weekend across Central and Eastern Kentucky, it was a damp start to the week in a few locations as a wave of energy brought scattered showers and a few rumbles of thunder during the morning hours of Monday. As the wave of energy driving the showers moved eastward, skies cleared a bit through the remainder of the day with a mix of clouds and sunshine. Breezy southwest winds kicked up with gusts 25 to 30 miles per hour, helping to push afternoon highs back into the mid to upper 70s providing a brief break from the cooler air we’ve dealt with the last few days.
A cold front will be on the move and rolling through the Ohio Valley into Tuesday so you’ll need to take the rain along as you head out the door. The morning hours should be dry with some sunshine before clouds begin to increase as the day wears on. By the afternoon hours, the scattered rain and storm chances will pick up the majority of the rain expected to fall heading into the evening hours and beyond. Temperatures should climb back into the low-70s for afternoon highs ahead of the increasing cloud cover thanks to the persistent southwest wind with another day of gusts in the 25 to 30 miles per hour range.
The wet weather will continue into the mid-week as the frontal boundary slowly works through the commonwealth, which is great news considering the drought conditions we are already experiencing area wide. Most locations should pick up around 1 inch rainfall totals with some localized areas seeing slightly higher totals. We’ll take every drop we can get given the dry conditions. With the rain around on Wednesday and the front dropping just to our south, afternoon highs will cool off once again with readings in the low-60s. With the front checked up to our south and some additional energy rotating through, look for a few additional showers on Thursday but it shouldn’t be a total washout. Afternoon highs will remain below average with most locations only topping out around the 60 degree mark.
We should enjoy a dry finish to the week on Friday with some sunshine back in the picture and temperatures recovering a bit into the mid-60s for afternoon highs. This weekend a series of weak boundaries along with some mid to upper level energy will work hand in hand to keep the chances for a few scattered showers around from time to time. If you have any outdoor plans just keep an eye on things but we shouldn’t be looking at an all day rain either day. Afternoon highs should reach the upper 60s Saturday before climbing into the low-70s Sunday. The scattered shower chances look to hang around into early next week as our unsettled weather pattern remains in place.
