American Legion Post lost $2,000 after a scam

MILLERSBURG, Ky. (WTVQ) – An American Legion post in Bourbon County is warning people about a new scam involving your electric bill.

The post’s finance officer, Randy Fisher says scammers called the post over the weekend claiming they were Kentucky Utilities employees.

Fisher says the scammers told the post it hadn’t paid its bills for the past two months and threatened to shut off its electric.

Fisher says the most convincing part was the scammers knew the exact amount of their electric bill. Post employees followed the scammer’s instructions and gave them $2,000 worth of money cards.

“They were well-rehearsed. They knew the things to say,” said Randy Fisher.

Fisher says they filed a police report.

The money that scammers got was going to buy Thanksgiving baskets and Christmas presents for families in need.

“We were very, very angry once we found out,” said Fisher.

Fisher says members are still going to do the baskets and presents, but they’ll have to ask for donations.
