Active weather pattern kicks in for Central and Eastern Kentucky Tuesday

Three different storm systems should bring some impactful weather to the area over the next week

It was a quiet and chilly start to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky, which was not a bad thing considering the active weather pattern we are going to be dealing with over the next 7 days. After a cold start to the day with temperatures in the upper 20s in many spots, some filtered sunshine pushed highs back into the low 40s. Hopefully you enjoyed the tranquil start as our weather will be anything but in the coming days.

The first storm system will begin to impact our weather into the early hours of Tuesday as a strong wave of low pressure spins into the Ohio Valley. Expect some solid rain chances, especially during the morning hours before we see some drier air wedge in during the afternoon hours. Highs will reach the low 50s in most locations before temperatures take a tumble as the low spins off to our northeast. We are looking at some healthy rainfall totals out of this system with a good solid 1″+ totals expected across the area.

Winds will be an issue with gusts over 40 miles per hour at times so a Wind Advisory is out for all of Central and Eastern Kentucky Tuesday with our central counties including the Bluegrass staying in the advisory into early Wednesday as boundary swings through the area and ushers in the colder air as the wind stays up. With some moisture along that boundary, a few snow showers will be possible with some minor accumulations possible for the Wednesday morning commute.

We should see a quick break in the action on Thursday before almost a carbon copy of the Tuesday/Wednesday system enters the picture on Friday. Another round of rain along with some strong wind gusts will be possible followed by some significantly colder air for the weekend as the coldest air of the season should drop in. Temperatures may struggle to reach the low to mid-20s for highs with some additional snow showers possible into the day on Saturday. With winds gusting out of the west/northwest…”feel-like” temps could stay in the single digits or below on Saturday and Sunday!

With the cold air in place, a secondary wave sliding into the Ohio Valley for the MLK holiday could produce a legitimate snow chance per the latest data but keep in mind it’s still a week out and there will probably be some adjustment. The “warm nose” of air just above the surface, which typically creates a freezing rain scenario isn’t too far to the south so this bears watching closely in the coming days. To put a bow on all of this, get set for plenty of impactful and potentially disruptive weather on the horizon.
