ABC 36 Teacher of the Week: Stephanie Britton

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WTVQ)– One Bondurant Middle School math teacher has earned herself the title of WTVQ ABC 36 Parent-Teacher Store “Teacher of the Week.”

She’s trying to share her love of math, while answering the age-old question, “Why do I need to know this?”

“There is more than one way to solve a problem,” said Parent-Teacher Store Teacher of the Week Stephanie Britton.

And for Britton, that applies not just to mat but also the start of her teaching career.

“In high school, they actually needed someone to teach the algebra one class for a teacher who had to go on jury duty. I was in calculus at the time and they said, ‘hey, we need somebody to help us out in this class. Would you do it?'” said Britton about the unconventional start of her career.

As a high school student, she got her first taste of teaching and fell in love. Now, she hopes to help sixth-graders in Franklin County find that same joy in math.

“I think it’s important that you relate math to their world. So, we do a lot with football season. Actually, last year we did a whole series using toilet paper to teach math, which was an interesting thing, but the kids loved it,” said Britton.

And despite generations, some things don’t change very much.

“‘Why do I need to know this?’ That’s the most famous question in the world. ‘When am I ever going to use this in the real world?’ And so, if you can find those opportunities to show them, it makes a world of difference for them,” Britton concluded.

If you know a teacher making an impact in the lives of children, nominate them to be the WTVQ ABC 36 Parent Teacher Store Teacher of the Week.
