ABC 36 Teacher of the Week: Dana Freeman

MADISON COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) — Twenty-seven years is a long time to do anything, but as the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun.

“I think it’s just always been my passion. I’ve never really ever thought about doing anything else. It’s just what I always wanted to do,” said Dana Freeman, a teacher at Kit Carson Elementary School in Madison County.

Freeman has taught at Kit Carson Elementary for nearly three decades. And though things have certainly changed in education during that time, one thing has remained constant.

“More than anything, it’s important, these kids need love. They need to feel like they’re heard and they’re seen and that you care about them. They really need to feel that connection,” said Freeman, who is this week’s WTVQ ABC 36 Parent-Teacher Store Teacher of the Week.

Freeman has inspired so many during her career, even to a point that students have now become colleagues.

“Last year, I got to teach with a co-worker that was my former fifth-grade student. She made the comment that she became a teacher because of me. That just absolutely was probably the best compliment I’ve ever received,” said Freeman.

Mrs. Freeman has said this is her last year teaching, although she’s hesitant to commit to that.

“I still have some mixed feelings about leaving. Part of me thinks it’s time and another part of me really hates to leave. It’s a hard decision to make for me,” she observed.

Last year or not, her impact on students is undeniable. She hopes more people will follow in her footsteps and become teachers.

“We play such an important part on their social and emotional and mental health. You can really inspire them to be their best and to not give up and just really support them,” Freeman said of the need for teachers.

If you know an educator, that can be a teacher, a parent homeschooling, Sunday school, anyone helping others learn who is making an impact just like Mrs. Freeman is, nominate them on our website.
