AAA: Weekend holiday travel expected to break record
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – The holiday travel rush is on. AAA expects this to be a record-breaking year.
According to AAA, a projected 107 million Americans will take to planes, trains, cars and other modes of transportation, all within a little over one week.
That’s a three percent increase since this time last year, and the ninth consecutive year of rising year-end holiday travel, according to AAA.
At Blue Grass Airport Friday, people were trying to beat the rush.
They’re just some of the expected 6.4 million people flying this holiday season.
We talked to some travelers before they hit the runway Friday afternoon.
One woman says she is flying to Santiago, Chile. She told ABC 36 she’s happy to be one of millions in the U.S. going to see their family.
“I have to go. I have to go be with my family,” said Gigliola Lubiano. “My parents and my brother are down there, so I just have to go see them and give them my ‘Merry Christmas’ hug. I know it’s going to be stressful to travel because I’m going to Atlanta now, so that’s going to be insane, but it’s worth it.”
Lubiano says she hopes no one will let the busy travel weekend keep them from being with their family this holiday season.
Not only will the skies be full, but the roads will be busy as well.
AAA expects over 97 million people to jump in cars and hit the road, driving to their destination.
