A wet week ahead after the solar eclipse

Keep the rain gear handy the next few days as we are looking at solid chnaces through Thursday

The much anticipated solar eclipse of 2024 has come and gone but not before wowing millions of Americans in the path of totality, which remarkably stayed pretty cloud free in most locations given all the clouds and a bit of unsettled weather close to the path. Much of Central and Eastern Kentucky dealt with scattered clouds and even a few pop-up showers during the afternoon as temperatures topped out in the low 70s even with the clouds around. We did see some spectacular shots of the eclipse out of Southern Indiana.

You’ll want to keep the rain gear handy the next few days as a frontal boundary and a wave of low pressure slide in from the southwest. With plenty of moisture being pulled northward out of the Gulf of Mexico expect occasional rain and some thunder at times heading into Tuesday. Temperatures will be held in check a bit with most spots topping out in the mid-60s.

More wet weather is on the way for Wednesday and Thursday and by the time this system begins to wind down to end the week, we may end up with some healthy rainfall totals. Much of the data is showing a solid 2″-3″ rain with locally higher amounts which could lead to some minor flooding/high water issues. It should stay breezy through the most of the week with afternoon highs in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees.

One thing to watch on Thursday is the potential for a few strong storms as the main surface low spins right through the heart of the Bluegrass. The Storm Prediction Center has much of Central and Northeastern Kentucky in their Day 4 Extended Severe Weather Outlook so this is something we’ll be monitoring. Damaging winds should be the primary threat but with the wind fields being up a bit and given the time of the year it is, an isolated tornado threat may be possible. Expect slightly cooler air Friday with a few left over showers before we dry out Saturday and temperatures moderate a bit.
