A touch of spring for the final weekend of 2025
We could see some record high temperatures by Sunday
It definitely didn’t feel like the Christmas holiday on Thursday with unseasonably mild air in place across the region and Friday was no different. Even with abundant cloud cover around the area, afternoon highs managed to stay a solid 20 degrees above average with readings into the mid to upper 60s thanks to a breezy southwest wind pushing mild air into the region. We did see a few spotty showers with a weak wave of energy sliding through but not everyone saw rain and it was another pleasant day for this time of the year.
Heading into the final weekend of 2025, look for more unseasonably mild weather across the commonwealth with Saturday looking pretty decent despite the persistent cloud cover we’ve seen of late. Even with a lack of sunshine it should be a pretty nice day for any outdoor activities as the holiday season rolls along. Afternoon highs should generally reach the low and mid-60s with more of an east wind as a frontal boundary will be laying south of the commonwealth, poised to move our direction as a more significant storm system impacts the area and flips our weather pattern on its head into next week.
We could be staring at record high temperatures across the board as a strong cold front makes a run into the Ohio Valley. While a few showers will be possible from time to time on Sunday, much of the day will be dry with breezy southwest winds and temperatures surging all the way into the low-70s for most locations! This would set daily record highs for several cities as winds out of the southwest push very mild air in on the heels of a southwest wind. As the front noses on Sunday night, look for showers and thunderstorms to break out just ahead of it with the potential of a few strong wind gusts. The Storm Prediction Center has put parts of Central and Southern Kentucky in a low end Level 1 risk (out of 5) for the potential for strong to damaging winds so that’s something to keep an eye on. Much colder air will come pouring into the area so it’s going to feel like winter again heading into early next week. A few scattered snow showers will be possible as the colder air catches up but the big story will be temperatures starting off in the mid to upper 30s Monday before falling off as the day wears on and the cold air settles in.
Our weather should be fairly quiet and cold to close out 2025 as high pressure moves in toward New Year’s Eve. Afternoon highs should only reach the low-30s despite some sunshine on Tuesday but should recover a few degrees into the upper 30s on New Year’s Eve thanks to a southwest wind picking up ahead of a weak frontal boundary that will drop through the Ohio Valley as we ring in the new year. Dry conditions are expected for New Years Day 2026 with slightly colder air in the wake of the departing front as temperatures remain unseasonably cold with highs into the low-30s.
