A quiet stretch of weather on tap the next few days
Cooler air on Tuesday will give way to warmer temperatures mid-week
After a cooler and sunny Easter Sunday, it was a frosty start to this first full week of April with temperatures dipping down into the low 30s to start the day Monday. This allowed a little patchy frost to develop in a few locations and we could see the potential of that the next few mornings given the upcoming weather set-up. It was a pleasant day across the area with sunshine and afternoon highs working back into the low and mid-60s as a southwest flow kicked in ahead of an approaching weak frontal boundary.
The aforementioned front will bring a reinforcing shot of cooler air into the region so we’ll take a step back with our temperatures heading into Tuesday. Look for another frosty start to the day with temperatures in the low to mid-30s. A Frost Advisory is out for all of Central and Eastern Kentucky until 10am Eastern Tuesday so make sure to protect those tender plants. Winds will shift around to the northeast as cooler high pressure builds into the Ohio Valley. Even with a good bit of sunshine around, afternoon highs will definitely be cool, even by early April standards with temperatures only managing to reach the low 50s in most spots, which is a solid 10 degrees below average for this time of the year.
More frost potential will be on the table heading into Wednesday morning as the area high pressure starts to drift off to our east. Once the sun comes up, the warm-up will be on as the return flow on the backside of that system helps winds shift around to the southwest. The combination of the sun and the southwest breeze will help push afternoon highs all the way back around the 70 degree mark by Wednesday afternoon so look for super quick recovery with temperatures mid-week. The upward trend will continue as high pressure stays locked in over the Atlantic, keeping things mostly sunny and mild into Thursday with afternoon highs back into the low-70s.
Heading toward Friday and the upcoming weekend we’ll see yet another sneak peak of summer here in early April as temperatures climb into the unseasonably warm territory yet again. A frontal boundary will drop in from the northwest and stall across the central part of the Ohio Valley so it’s possible we could see a few isolated thunderstorms to end the week but most locations should remain dry. Afternoon highs will jump back into the mid-70s Friday before climbing back into the upper 70s on Saturday. There will still be a low end pop-up storm threat potentially across the northern half of the state on Saturday but the frontal boundary will eventually work off to the north as a warm front, taking the rain chances with it. It should feel more like June instead of April By Sunday and into early next week with afternoon highs back in the low 80s, which will be great for any outdoor plans you may have to close out the weekend.
