A quick shot of some wintry weather into Wednesday as the active weather rolls on

With scattered snow showers and colder air early Wednesday, we could see a few slick spots during the morning commute

It was a wet and windy Tuesday across Central and Eastern Kentucky with widespread rain and breezy conditions especially during the early morning hours. The good news is that much of the area picked up some very beneficial rain with totals topping out ion the 1″ to 2″ range! Winds gusted 35 to 40 miles per hour at times with a few gusts around 50 miles per hour during the afternoon. The Wind Advisory continues for the area into early Wednesday as breezy conditions persist even as the wind slowly diminishes. We’ll still feel the impacts of this first of three storm systems that will move through the region in the coming days.

Tg Active Weather

A batch of snow showers may develop as a boundary rolls thorough early Wednesday putting a light coating on the ground. With temperatures slightly below the freezing mark, a few slick spots will be possible so you’ll want to allow some extra time for the morning commute. Our road conditions “forecast” map…which is a nice new tool we have to help with possible road conditions shows a few slick spots across the board Wednesday morning so keep that in mind. The flakes should depart pretty quickly leaving us with a breezy and chilly day with highs in the upper 30s and low 40s.

Tg Snow

We’ll see a much needed break from the active weather on Thursday with some sunshine and highs surging back into the upper 40s thanks to a southwest wind cranking up ahead of our next storm system. It will be a repeat performance on Friday and into Saturday as another strong wave of low pressure moves through the Ohio Valley. Expect strong wind gusts, heavy rain  followed by a legitimate blast of colder air for the upcoming weekend. We could once again see rainfall totals in the 1″-2″ range and highs in the low 50s Friday before we tumble to around 30 degrees for a high Saturday along with a few snow showers.

Tg Fly

Much of the data still supports the potential for a mainly snow event late Sunday and into the King holiday on Monday. Temperatures should be in the 20s for highs and teens for lows, plenty cold enough for an all-snow event. Of course we are still several days away from this so things may change but it bears watching into next week. The January cold will be made worse by breezy conditions so wind chills could be in the single digits and even below zero potentially. Another thing to watch is some even colder air which could arrive by the middle part of next week with actual low temperatures approaching zero so our active pattern will stay kicked in.
