A quick break from the active weather pattern late week
We need a few dry days with another round of heavy rain possible Saturday
Wednesday’s Weather Recap
The active and unsettled weather pattern continued on Wednesday as another wave of low pressure approached Central and Eastern Kentucky from the southwest. With the snow pack in place and milder air trying to work northward, we saw some some advection fog and drizzle here in the Bluegrass, which reduced visibilities and kept things dreary. We saw a bit of a temperature gradient across the Commonwealth with highs in the mid to upper 30s north and a low 40s down south, although somewhat milder air is expected late Wednesday evening as the rain picks up. Scattered rain is possible overnight, especially in Southeastern Kentucky where the ground is already very wet so a Flood Watch is out there into Thursday morning. At least we’ll avoid any wintry weather with this system as everything will fall in the liquid form.
Thursday: A Brief Dry Spell
As the area of low pressure exits the region, we’ll finally get a chance to dry out, which is much needed after the consistent precipitation of the past few weeks. It will definitely be a cooler day, with clouds hanging around for much of the day and afternoon highs in the mid 30s.
Valentine’s Day: Sunshine Returns
Valentine’s Day is shaping up to be a nice one across the region. Expect plenty of sunshine with highs sneaking back into the mid-40s. It will be a great day to get outside and enjoy some drier conditions before the next system moves in.
Weekend Outlook: Heavy Rain and Flooding Potential
Unfortunately, more wet weather is on the way for Saturday, as a strong wave of low pressure brings plenty of moisture to the region. Heavy rain will be possible, with most locations picking up 2 to 3 inches of rain, and 3 to even 5 inches not off the table in southern Kentucky. Given how saturated the ground already is, this will increase the potential for flash flooding, and we’ll have to closely monitor area rivers and streams for potential flooding concerns into early next week.
Sunday and Beyond: Colder with Snow Chances
Much colder air will filter in on Sunday, with temperatures falling through the day and the potential for snow showers to wrap up the weekend. It looks cold for President’s Day as well, with highs only in the mid-30s. A southern system could bring some additional snow chances by the middle of next week, so this will be something to watch in the days ahead.
