A much needed quiet stretch of weather to close out May

After big storms caused plenty of problems over Memorial Day weekend, nicer conditions are expected in the coming days.

As expected it was quite the active and stormy mid part of the holiday weekend with several rounds of strong to severe storms rolling through Central and Eastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon and again during the early hours of Memorial Day. We saw widespread reports of wind damage as a result of these storms with lots of trees and power lines down. Unfortunately the commonwealth saw 4 fatalities as a result of the severe weather moving through. The frontal boundary responsible for all the active weather moved out Monday leaving a mix of clouds and sunshine and comfortable highs in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees along with breezy west winds. We did enjoy a pretty sunrise for Memorial Day following all the storms.

Conditions look much more tranquil as we head into the mid-week and folks get back into the daily routine following the long holiday weekend. There is an upper level system that will sit and spin over the Great Lakes the next few days and with spokes of energy rotating around it, we could see a few isolated showers during the afternoon hours mainly across Northern and Northeastern Kentucky. Much of the area should be dry with pleasant highs into the mid to upper 70s.

Late this week the aforementioned upper low will kick out to the east, allowing some drier and cooler air to move into the Ohio Valley. Humidity levels should be lower than they have been lately and afternoon highs will be slightly below average for late May with most locations topping out in the low to mid-70s. This is just what the doctor ordered given the wet weather pattern much of May which is lead to some pretty saturated grounds especially for our southern counties.

Kicking off June this weekend it will feel more like the summer season as temperatures recover nicely. A wave of energy should weaken somewhat as it moves in from the west so this will keep our isolated storm chances on the low side. With a mix of clouds and sunshine afternoon highs should be either side of the 80 degree mark. Expect to dodge a storm or two for any outdoor plans but for now we aren’t looking at a wash-out.
