A few storms and warm early August temperatures persist
Scattered clouds will keep afternoon highs in the low to mid-80s
Tuesday turned out to be another pleasant early August day across Central and Eastern Kentucky. A good bit of cloud cover helped keep highs in check, holding them in the low to mid-80s—well below what we typically see this time of year. With humidity levels increasing a bit during the day, a few showers and storms flaring up in the afternoon, although it felt pretty nice to be outside especially compared to the sweltering July we just wrapped up. Those that did see rain saw some torrential downpours and some minor flooding in the low lying areas and this included Lexington and Fayette County. However there were a number of spots that stayed dry and enjoyed a very manageable summer day.
Wednesday Brings More of the Same — With a Few Afternoon Storms
The sluggish upper-level trough that’s been influencing our weather will continue to drift east on Wednesday, and that means we’ll stay in a similar pattern. Expect a mix of clouds and sunshine, with highs again in the mid-80s. We’ll also keep the chance for a few isolated to scattered showers and storms, especially in the late afternoon and early evening hours. It won’t be a washout by any means, but some spots could see localized heavy downpours, gusty winds, and lightning if a storm moves through.
Warming Up Late Week — But Not Too Hot
As we head toward the end of the week, the upper-level energy finally begins to fade and push out, allowing a ridge to build in from the west. That’ll mean a bit more sunshine, slightly higher humidity, and warmer temperatures—though nothing outrageous. Highs on Thursday and Friday will climb into the upper 80s, which is right where we should be for early to mid-August. A few isolated storms could still develop during the heat of the day, but chances will be on the lower side.
Weekend Outlook: Great Timing for Summer’s Last Hurrah
We’re watching two features that could influence our weekend forecast: a low pressure system near the Southeast coast that might throw some moisture into southern and southeastern Kentucky, and a cold front dropping in from the northwest late Sunday. Neither system looks like a washout-maker right now, but they could lead to some scattered rain chances—especially late Sunday. That said, most of the weekend should be dry with highs in the upper 80s and moderate humidity. It’s shaping up to be a solid weekend overall, which is especially good news for families squeezing in one last summer outing before school kicks off next week. Just keep the rain gear nearby and we’ll keep tracking the latest trends.
