A few flakes mixed in with some rain as we close out the week
An upper level low spinning over the area will keep things unsettled for the final Friday of 2023
You could feel the difference in temperatures on Thursday across Central and Eastern Kentucky with an upper level system spinning in from the west. Even with a mix of clouds and sunshine along with mainly dry conditions, afternoon highs struggled to reach the upper 30s and low 40s. Tack on a brisk southwest wind and at times it felt more like the low 30sw across the board.
Heading into Friday the upper low should be right over the heart of the Bluegrass keeping the chances for a mix of rain and snow showers in play. The more favored area for any snow on the ground looks to be across Western Kentucky and Southern Indiana where there could be a light coating on the grassy areas. While it’s possible a heavier snow shower could do the same across Central and Eastern Kentucky it is a little less likely but don’t be surprised if you see some snow flying around. These upper level systems typically pull colder air down to the surface so expect afternoon highs to struggle to reach the upper 30s in most spots.
As the low pulls east of Kentucky into the weekend, the scattered snow shower chances should be confined to the eastern mountains with areas above 1500 feet seeing some possible accumulations given the upslope flow on the heels of a northwest flow. The rest of the area looks dry as clouds linger much of Saturday with highs sneaking into the low 40s. Heading into New Year’s Eve it should be a decent finish to the year with a mix of clouds and sunshine along with afternoon highs surging into the upper 40s. Weather shouldn’t be an issue for those heading out to celebrate the New Year.
A weak boundary will drop in from the northwest as we ring in 2024 with a re-enforcing shot of chilly air on Monday. The model data is still indicating a mainly dry New Year’s Day although a few spotty showers with a few flakes mixed in can’t be ruled out. Temperatures once again will struggle to get out of the upper 30s for afternoon highs so it looks a bit cool on Monday. Temperatures will moderate slowly but still in the low 40s heading through the first few days of 2024.
