A damp Tuesday but better weather returns quickly
Rain chances will be winding down as a cold front moves east of the commonwealth into the mid-week
The rain gear definitely came in handy on Tuesday across Central and Eastern Kentucky as a cold front moved through the Ohio Valley. We saw several rounds of rain, one in the morning and another through the afternoon which produced some pockets of moderate to heavy rain. The highest rainfall totals were across southern and south-central Kentucky with several locations picking up nearly an inch of rain. In addition to the rain, some strong winds managed to make it down to the surface during the afternoon with a peak wind gust of 60 miles per hour reported at Bluegrass Airport. With the clouds and rain around, afternoon highs were held in check slightly with upper 50s in most locations.
The front will press eastward into the mid-week ushering in some slightly cooler but pleasant air for late March. Winds will back off and with a mix of clouds and sunshine, afternoon highs should work back into the mid to upper 50s for highs, which is right at or just below average for this time of the year. This will be the first of a few dry days as the month quickly winds down.
After a comparable day on Thursday with more sunshine and temperatures edging toward the 60 degree mark, high pressure to our south to help kick in a southwest wind as we close out the week on Friday. This will boos our afternoon highs back into the mid-60s so it should feel really nice heading into Easter weekend.
With a warm front laying just north of Kentucky this weekend and several waves of energy riding along it, it looks unseasonably warm but we may have to dodge a few showers and storms especially as we get a little deeper into Easter weekend. Expect highs either side of the 70 degree mark Saturday through Monday so it should feel pretty comfortable for Easter Sunday and as we kick off April. Our storm chances should steadily increase with the best window for activity beginning Sunday night and continuing through Tuesday when a cold front will move through the commonwealth bringing an end to the rain and storms.
