BBB: Scam Using IRS Name Targets Kentuckians
The BBB said that most of the calls were made to people in the Georgetown-Scott County area, among other places.
Automated messages from a ‘202’ area code were left for consumers on their voice mail or answering machines.
The BBB said the caller claimed to be with the IRS and said that the message was in regard to a serious legal matter.
The caller also said that the victim would face legal action if they did not return the call.
The BBB said the scammer would claim that the victim owed back taxes, which needed to be paid through a pre-paid debit card.
It was all a scam.
The real IRS does not call people out of the blue, or send out unsolicited email or text messages.
Consumers were asked to report the scams to the BBB of Central and Eastern Kentucky at (859) 259-1008 or 1-800-866-6668.
