More wet weather on tap the next few days

We may see a slightly drier pattern toward the weekend

After a wet first part of the long holiday weekend with rainfall totals in the 2′-3″ range in most locations, we caught a bit of a break for Memorial Day on Monday. With a frontal boundary draped across Southern Kentucky we saw a few additional showers and storms across the southern half of the state with mainly dry conditions farther to the north. With a mix of clouds and sunshine around, afternoon highs reach the mid-70s in most spots so it ended up being a decent day for outdoor activities related to the holiday.

The wet weather won’t stay away long as the front to our south begins to lift back to the north on Tuesday. This will once again increase the chances for showers and storms across Central and Eastern Kentucky as folks head back to work after the long holiday weekend. You’ll definitely need the rain gear from time to time with some steady rain expected along with a few rumbles of thunder possible as well. Despite the clouds and showers around, afternoon highs will stay out in the mid-70s in most spots.

The damp weather pattern will continue to hang tough into the mid-week with the stalled out front over the region as waves of energy ride along it. This will mean another day with occasional rain and storms area-wide. Most locations should pick up an additional 1″ plus of rain with the Tuesday/Wednesday system so look for a serious dent in the drought we’ve been experiencing much of the spring. High pressure building into the Great Lakes will help push the front south of the commonwealth into Thursday and bring some welcomed drier air into the region heading into the late week. With a good bit of sunshine around and the lack of showers, afternoon highs should be nice with most locations topping out into the low-80s.

Heading into the final weekend of May, the overall trend is for drier weather, which is great news considering we’ve caught up on our rainfall deficit and many more outdoor events are starting to crank up as we approach the summer season. This is another weak cold front that is forecast to drop through the Ohio Valley on Saturday so we may see a low end shower chances across the commonwealth. Otherwise look for a mix of clouds and sunshine with temperatures backing off a few degrees with afternoon highs into the mid-70s. The less active weather pattern should carry over into the beginning of June next Monday as temperatures bump up a few degrees into the upper 70s.
