Drying out and cooler into the late week

Temperatures will be back below average the next few days

We saw some beneficial rain across Central and Eastern Kentucky during the early hours of Wednesday as a slow moving frontal boundary dropped into the commonwealth. Most locations here in the Bluegrass saw around a half inch of rain with totals more in the 1″ range down south which was great news considering the on-going drought. With the front drifting across Southern Kentucky, much cooler air moved into the Bluegrass from the north. With low clouds hanging around, temperatures struggled through the 50s for afternoon highs. Across the southeastern mountains, it was slightly milder on the other side of the front with temperatures in the 60s along with some scattered showers on occasion so overall it was a dreary day across the board.

The front will eventually push far enough to the south into early Thursday to wind down a few lingering showers that may  hang around Southern Kentucky. Drier air should begin to work into the region as we hit the daylight hours with a pleasantly cool Thursday on tap for the commonwealth. With some decent sunshine around and an overall drier trend compared to a few days ago, it should be a decent day to be outside, although temperatures will remain below average for the early part of May. Most spots should top out in the low-60s for afternoon highs so it will be a touch on the cool side.

An area of high pressure should drift through as we close out the week on Friday so we should be set-up for another nice day across the area. With more sunshine around winds shifting around to the southwest, temperatures will climb back into the upper-60s for afternoon highs so it will be pleasant if you are out and about. A fast moving frontal boundary will slide in Friday night and into Saturday morning with a few scattered showers and storms but this system will be in and out rather quickly. After a few morning showers, the rest of Saturday should be dry and with temperatures expected to top out into the mid-70s it should be a nice afternoon for any outdoor weekend plans you may have.

Heading into Mother’s Day another frontal boundary and wave of low pressure will be rolling into the Ohio Valley so the chances for additional showers and storms will be on the increase, especially as we get deeper into Sunday. You may have to adjust any outdoor plans you have as we celebrate all the Mom’s out there so keep that in mind. The shower chances should be exiting the region as we begin next week with just a lingering shower or two early Monday. Slightly cooler air will return as we take yet another step back with temperatures as afternoon highs drop back into the upper 60s. It should be another dry stretch, at least for a few days before additional shower chances return by the middle of next week.
