Fantastic weather rolls along for Labor Day weekend
Look for plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures
It was a great finish to what has been an incredible week of weather across Central and Eastern Kentucky as the early preview of fall continued. A weak frontal boundary dropping through the commonwealth did produce a few scattered clouds mixed in with the sunshine, while trying to squeeze out a stray shower or two but had a lot of dry air to contend with. Afternoon highs reached the low 80s once again and as the front slides southward, the long Labor Day holiday weekend is looking very nice with our quiet weather pattern continuing.

High pressure drifting out of southern Canada into the Ohio Valley will usher in a reinforcing shot of dry and mild air so it should be a great start to the holiday weekend. Saturday should be stellar for any outdoor activities, including Kentucky’s home opener at Kroger Field against Toledo at 12:45pm. Look for abundant sunshine, low humidity and afternoon highs in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees, which is amazing for the final few days of August. Make sure and take the sunscreen along for anything outdoors as it won’t take much to get a sunburn if you are out for any length of time.

Look for more great weather the rest of the holiday weekend with sunshine and highs in the low 80s on Sunday before we start to see a slow transition in our weather pattern. Kicking off September on Monday, a mid-level wave to the south may try to throw a bit of moisture to the north but there should be enough dry air to keep any shower chance on the low end at best. The most favorable area for the isolated activity would be across the southern half of the commonwealth but don’t change any holiday plans as most locations remain dry with afternoon highs in the low to mid-80s.

It appears we’ll finally see some much needed rain chances return to the region in the early days of September as the return flow on the back side of high pressure brings more moisture back to the area. Look for scattered showers and storms to become more numerous into the mid-week as a cold front slides in from the northwest. This is good news considering that most of the commonwealth is dealing with overly dry conditions given the lack of widespread rain over the last month or so. Once the front clears the area, another shot of cooler air will follow with afternoon highs backing down into the low to mid-70s later next week.
