Typical mid August weather expected in the coming days

Our scattered storm chances will increase into the mid-week

After a pleasant August weekend with plenty of sunshine and seasonably hot temperatures, Monday brought a similar setup across Central and Eastern Kentucky. High pressure kept most of us dry, though a few isolated storms managed to bubble up in the afternoon heat. Highs topped out in the low 90s, and when you factored in the humidity, it felt a bit hotter than that.

Increasing Storm Chances Tuesday
Tuesday will see a gradual uptick in scattered storm chances as moisture streams north from the south and a slow-moving cold front drifts toward the Ohio Valley. Storm coverage won’t be widespread, but any cell that pops up could bring localized heavy downpours. Outside of the storms, we’ll have a mix of clouds and sun with highs in the upper 80s and noticeably muggier conditions.

Midweek Brings Higher Rain Coverage
Wednesday marks the first day back to school for Fayette County and several surrounding districts, and it may also be the wettest day of the week. The front will stall just north of the Ohio River, providing a focus for scattered to numerous showers and storms. While it won’t be an all-day rain, the overall coverage will be higher than we’ve seen lately, and a few storms could produce heavy rain and frequent lightning. Similar conditions are expected Thursday, even as the front begins to lift northward. Highs both days will hover in the upper 80s.

Hotter, Drier Trend for the Weekend
By Friday, storm chances should back off as the front fizzles to our north and high pressure regains control. This will usher in a stretch of mainly dry weather with plenty of sunshine, hot afternoons in the low 90s, and heat indices pushing near 100 at times. Only a stray storm or two is possible during peak heating.
