Drier weather on tap as temperatures climb to end the week

Look for sunshine and highs around 90 degrees the next few days

After a couple of stormy days across Central and Eastern Kentucky, Thursday gave us a well-earned break for some folks across the area but unfortunately not everyone. Morning sunshine along with some instability helped fuel some heavy rain producing and very slow moving storms right over Lexington and the heart of the metro area during the early part of Thursday afternoon. A few spots in south and southwest Lexington saw over 2 inches of rain in short order, prompting the 2nd Flash Flood Warning for parts of Fayette County for in the last 3 days! Other locations saw a few storms but the coverage was overall much less than earlier this week. Temperatures climbed into the upper 80s for those spots that remained dry, which is pretty typical for early August and thankfully the humidity wasn’t too oppressive—just enough to remind us it’s still summer.

Sunshine and Heat Return Friday
As high pressure builds in from the west, Friday is shaping up to be another nice day. We’ll see plenty of sunshine with highs in the upper 80s to near 90°. It’ll feel just a touch humid at times, but nowhere near as muggy as the end of July. Still, if you’ve got plans to be outdoors for any length of time, take it slow and stay hydrated.

Great Weekend for Outdoor Plans
The weather looks fantastic as we head into the final weekend of summer break for many local students. With sunshine in full supply and very low chances for any pop-up storms, it’s a green light for outdoor plans. Temperatures will heat up a bit, with many spots likely reaching the low 90s both Saturday and Sunday. If you’re heading to the pool, lake, or park, be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen and drink lots of water—classic August heat will be in full swing.

Storm Chances Return Midweek
As we move into early next week, we’ll be wedged between a low off the East Coast and a front moving in from the northwest. That setup could bring a few isolated afternoon storms Monday, though most of us will stay dry. By Tuesday and Wednesday, that approaching front will bring a more noticeable uptick in rain and storm chances. With added clouds and showers around, highs should ease back into the upper 80s midweek.
