Storm chances diminish as we close out the week
Expect a pleasant and dry Mother's Day weekend
Thursday brought another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms across Central and Eastern Kentucky, thanks to a pair of weather systems—low pressure to our south and a cold front dropping in from the north. Some of these storms especially in Southeastern Kentucky turned strong to severe late in the day with damaging winds and large hail in the strongest cells. Fortunately, the worst of the action is expected to wind down quickly after sunset, paving the way for a much calmer and more comfortable pattern as we close out the week.
Bright and Breezy Friday Ahead
High pressure will build in from the northwest on Friday, sweeping away the stormy skies and delivering a return to sunshine and seasonable conditions. A breezy northeast wind will usher in slightly cooler air, but it’ll still feel great for early May. Most spots should top out in the upper 60s and the sunshine will make for a beautiful end to the workweek. It’s the kind of day that reminds us spring is in full swing.
Ideal Weather for Mother’s Day Weekend
Saturday kicks off Mother’s Day weekend with a cool start—morning lows will dip into the low 40s in many spots, so you may need a light jacket early on. But the rest of the day looks fantastic. Sunshine will dominate and temperatures should rebound nicely to around 70° in the afternoon, making for a picture-perfect spring day for any outdoor plans.
Sunday is shaping up to be just as pleasant. While a few high clouds may drift in, most of the area should stay dry with afternoon highs warming into the mid-70s. The upper-level low that’s been sitting over the Deep South now looks likely to remain far enough south to keep any rain at bay for Central and Eastern Kentucky through Sunday evening. All in all, it looks like a wonderful day to celebrate Mom.
Rain Chances Return Early Next Week
By Monday, that stalled upper-level low will begin drifting northward as high pressure loses its grip. As it does, scattered showers and storms are expected to return to the forecast for both Monday and Tuesday. These won’t be all-day rains, but you’ll likely need the umbrella nearby at times—especially during the afternoon and evening hours. The good news? Unlike the chilly Derby weekend, temperatures will remain quite warm, with highs holding in the mid to upper 70s. By midweek, rain chances start to taper off, and highs may flirt with the 80-degree mark again.
