Frigid conditions expected to end the week

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – The snow may be winding down, but the cold is here to stay—for now. After an overnight snowfall that left much of central and eastern Kentucky coated in 1 to 2 inches of fresh snow, roads are slick this morning, with snow-covered surfaces leading to hazardous travel. Snow showers will continue to taper off through mid-morning, with only a few flurries lingering into the afternoon.
It’s not just the snow we’re dealing with—the bitter cold is making its presence known. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM due to wind chills dipping as low as 5 below zero in some spots. Even with afternoon highs attempting to climb into the low 20s, northwesterly winds will keep wind chills locked in the single digits throughout the day.
Skies will begin to clear out tonight, allowing temperatures to plummet into the single digits across most of the region. Some sheltered valleys may even slip slightly below zero. This drop in temperatures will set the stage for black ice concerns overnight and early Friday morning, especially on untreated roads and sidewalks.
Gradual Warm-up This Weekend
After a bitter cold start Friday morning, temperatures will begin a slow rebound. Highs on Friday will struggle to crack the freezing mark, but by Saturday and Sunday, we’ll climb into the upper 30s and low 40s under mostly sunny skies.
Looking ahead to early next week, temperatures will continue trending warmer, reaching the 50s by Monday and Tuesday. A weak system may bring a few light showers Tuesday, but the bigger focus will be on a more potent storm system late next week, which could bring another round of unsettled weather.
