More winter weather arrives for the mid-week

Accumulating snow should make for a challenging Wednesday morning commute

We got a sneak peek of the wintry weather set to impact us mid-week on this Tuesday as light snow showers graced the Bluegrass region thanks to some mid-level energy providing just enough lift to produce a few flakes. It was enough to coat the ground  and even produce an inch or so of accumulation especially for areas west of Lexington. It was another chilly day with afternoon highs in the mid-20s in Central Kentucky with low-30s down south.

But don’t put away those snow shovels just yet—there’s more to come. A developing winter storm is targeting the Commonwealth tonight into Wednesday. As a low-pressure system moves along the Gulf Coast, it’s expected to funnel ample moisture northward, setting the stage for widespread accumulating snowfall.

Tg Setup

Prepare for a messy Wednesday morning commute. Fresh snowfall is anticipated, so give yourself extra time to reach your destination safely. Morning temperatures will start in the mid-teens, climbing only to the low 20s by afternoon. We’re expecting a general snowfall of 4 to 6 inches across the region, with a narrow band of higher totals possible between I-64 and the Southern Kentucky Parkways. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for much of Central and Eastern Kentucky through noon Thursday, with a Winter Weather Advisory covering far Northern Kentucky.

Tg Alert

The snow may taper off briefly Wednesday afternoon as drier air moves in, but don’t let your guard down. Upper-level energy is expected to rotate through Wednesday night, bringing additional snowfall and keeping conditions wintry into Thursday morning.

As we move toward the end of the week, colder air will settle in, accompanied by breezy conditions. Bundle up, especially during the early morning hours. Friday morning appears to be the coldest, with clearing skies and a fresh snowpack potentially dropping temperatures into the single digits. Wind chills could dip below zero, even with a light to moderate breeze, so plan accordingly. Given this set up a Cold Weather Advisory is now out for all of Central and Eastern Kentucky from 1 am to 11 am Eastern on Thursday morning.

Tg Cold

Looking ahead to the weekend, there’s some good news. We’re expecting mainly dry conditions, which is a relief given the recent flooding and ongoing cleanup efforts. A weak system might pass through, bringing some cloud cover, but significant precipitation isn’t anticipated. Temperatures will begin to moderate, with highs reaching the mid to upper 30s on Saturday and climbing into the 40s by Sunday. Early next week, the dry trend continues, and we could see even milder air, with afternoon highs approaching the 50-degree mark—much closer to average for this time of year and a welcome thaw.
