Another round of cold air rolls into the Bluegrass
Periods of light snow showers will be possible Wednesday
It was another damp and dreary day across Central and Eastern Kentucky as a wave of low pressure moved in from the southwest while a cold front to our west pressed through the region. We started the morning quite foggy with visibilities less than a quarter of a mile at times to go along with the scattered rain showers. Low clouds and drizzle hung around much of the day with temperatures topping out around lunchtime in the mid-50s. The front ushered in another round of cold air late Tuesday afternoon with temperatures dropping through the 40s as we shift back into a winter pattern for a couple of days.
Light snow showers will be possible into the early hours of Wednesday as the departing wave of low pressure keeps some moisture around as the cold air settles in. The most favorable area initially for snow showers will eb the mountains of Eastern Kentucky with a light coating possible in a few locations. Temperatures should be around freezing at daybreak so a few slick spots can’t be ruled out although widespread issues aren’t expected.
A secondary mid-level wave will cruise through the commonwealth Wednesday afternoon keeping the potential for snow showers in play. It will be a cold and blustery day with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 30s and a brisk northwest wind making it feel more like temperatures in the teens and low 20s at times. There may be enough snow to put a light coating on the ground here in the Bluegrass and points east and with the activity hanging around after sunset on Wednesday as temperatures drop off, a few slick spots could be possible Wednesday night and into Thursday morning so keep that in mind.
Sunshine returns on Thursday but it won’t do much to warm us up with the cold air-mass in place. Afternoon highs will struggle into the upper 20s to around 30 degrees so the heavier coats will come in handy. The quiet weather should stick around for Friday and with high pressure drifting to our east, a quick return flow from the southwest will allow temperatures to recover nicely with highs into the mid-40s along with a mix of clouds and sunshine.
The upcoming weekend does look unsettled and damp once again as another storm system moves in from the west. Right now it appears the deeper we go into Saturday, the better chance of more widespread rain showers across the region. Temperatures will be “milder” relatively speaking with afternoon highs back into the low 50s so everything that falls should be in the liquid form. Showers will linger into Sunday with temperatures remaining above average into the low 50s for highs to close out the weekend. The active weather pattern looks to stay in place into early next week with the potential of another system bringing additional rain chances late Monday and toward Tuesday so keep the rain gear handy.
