Fantastic August weather rolls on
Temperatures will slowly moderate as we stay dry into the late week
It felt more like early October instead of late August to kick off Wednesday morning as temperatures dropped all the way into the upper 40s and low 50s to start the day with many locations flirting with record lows. The combination of clear skies and light winds allowed for some good radiational cooling and with a northeast flow pushing additional cooler air into the region, many folks needed a light jacket if they were out early. The rest of the day was “Chamber of Commerce” conditions with plenty of sunshine, a nice northeast wind and afternoon highs again only topping out into the mid-70s so it felt like an early fall and was a fantastic day to spend some time outdoors.
With strong high pressure in place over the Great Lakes, temperatures have been a bit slow to moderate so I think we’ll squeeze a few more days of this pleasant weather in with slightly warmer air each day before it heats up this weekend. Thursday morning should be similar to Wednesday with low 50s expected to start the day so we could get close to record lows yet again. With abundant sunshine on tap we should see temperatures climb a few more degrees for afternoon highs but an east wind could temper that slightly. It will still be another lovely day with afternoon highs in the low 80s here in the Bluegrass with upper 70s to around 80 degrees elsewhere.
The 2024 high school football season kick off on Friday and our weather should be about perfect for it. Afternoon highs should be back into the mid-80s but the humidity levels are going to be slow to climb so it should be a super nice evening for all the games and more importantly dry across the board. As you know the first several weeks of the football season can be tricky some years with scattered storms and lightning delays but not this year. The great weather rolls on into the weekend as high pressure begins to give way to the east. This will allow some warmer air in the Central Plains to spill eastward thus pushing afternoon highs back up around 90 degrees. The muggy-cast still looks manageable for humidity levels so it won’t be oppressive but you’ll want to make sure and hydrate if you’ll be out in the sun for any length of time this weekend.
Typical late August weather is on the docket for the end of the weekend and into early next week with low and even mid-90s as the muggy air creeps back into the region. A weak frontal boundary will slide into the Ohio Valley in the Tuesday Wednesday time frame and with enough heat and moisture around, we should see a return of a few scattered storms around late Tuesday and into the mid-week with highs in the low 90s. This isn’t a bad thing considering the extended dry stretch of weather we will see between now and then.
