Heavy rain and strong storm potential to start the week

Meteorologist Dillon Gaudet has the latest in your full ABC 36 Storm Team forecast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Monday! We are tracking a heavy rain and strong storm threat to start your workweek. Central Kentucky has a Level 2 Severe Risk and eastern Kentucky has a Level 1 Severe Risk for later today into tonight.

The threat of the strongest storms for us will likely be late this evening into the overnight hours. A cluster of storms will likely be dropping in out of the northwest that will pose a damaging wind gusts threat. There is the possibility for some embedded rotation, but the main severe threat will be damaging wind gusts. Another concern will be the flash flooding potential.

Isolated heavy downpours are possible throughout the day, with torrential downpours possible with the cluster of storms set to move in tonight. Low-lying and flood prone areas need to remain alert for the elevated risk for flash flooding. All of the ABC 36 viewing area has a “Slight Risk” or a Level 2 out 4 risk of flash flooding.

A widespread half inch to an inch worth of rain is expected through Tuesday, with some isolated spots pushing 2-4″. This won’t likely be widespread torrential rain, the main concern will be multiple rounds of storms passing over the same areas. That will increase the flood threat.

More clusters of storms will be in the forecast Tuesday and Wednesday. Neither day will be a washout, but heavy rain will be possible with any storms that go up. When it’s not storming it’s going to be feeling very humid out there. There will likely be quite the spread in high temperatures based off who sees storms during the afternoon and who doesn’t. If it’s drier you can expect afternoon highs to be pushing the low 90s both Tuesday and Wednesday. With dewpoints in the low-to-mid 70s, this will be making it feel closer to the upper 90s and low 100s.
