Dreary weather to close out the week but conditions look better into Saturday

After big storms and heavy rain during the early hours of Friday, we saw low clouds, drizzle and cooler air filtering in Friday

We saw lots of stormy and wet weather across Central and Eastern Kentucky as a strong line of thunderstorms moved through the commonwealth during the early hours of Friday. Most of the storms contained very heavy rain, lots of lightning and gusty winds. While the severe weather threat was on the table, we didn’t see any widespread issues with a few damage reports back around the I-65 corridor along with some in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky. The remainder of Friday was cloudy and dreary with low clouds and drizzle in the Bluegrass as the front pushed into Eastern Kentucky. This created quite a temperature gradient with highs around 70 down south with temperatures dropping into the low 50s up north.

The start of the weekend looks nice as high pressure builds in from the west. It will be a bit on the cool side compared to what we’ve enjoyed lately with early morning lows down around the 40 degree mark. With a good bit of sunshine and a west wind, afternoon highs should recover into the low and mid-60s which is slightly above average for mid-March. Some of the data is showing a few scattered clouds into the afternoon but it should still be a nice day.

The first of two boundaries will drop through the state on Sunday bringing in some additional clouds and a slight drop in temperatures. With a mix of clouds and sunshine afternoon highs will be slightly cooler but closer to average topping out into the upper 50s. As we roll toward the end of the winter season on Monday it appears we’ll see a parting shot from Mother Nature as a legitimate chilly shot of air quickly moves into the area. Temperatures will struggle to reach the low 40s for highs Monday with a few rain showers mixed with a snowflake or two. Luckily this won’t amount to much and just a little parting shot as winter says goodbye officially at 11:06pm on Tuesday evening.

Rolling through the first few days of the spring season next week our weather is looking pretty nice as temperatures will slowly recover and warm up a bit each day. The first full day of spring on Wednesday should featured upper 50s for afternoon highs, which will be about a 10 degree jump from Tuesday. Even as our rain chances increase late next week, temperatures should feel pretty decent with highs back in the low 60s.
